About Us

History

At its beginning, our congregation was a location of Vintage Church and we launched on January 5th 2020 at Laurel Park Elementary School. Two and a half months later, the COVID pandemic hit, and our church became displaced - losing our gathering location for an indefinite amount of time.

Like many churches we pivoted online, but from September 2020 through June 2021 (totaling a span of 10 months) we gathered weekly at the Large Shelter at Apex Community Park for our Sunday gatherings - rain or shine, hot or cold.

This was a formidable time for our congregation, but also for our surrounding community, as many walking along the nearby path would stop and observe, some would worship with us, and others would later become baptized and even join the church.

In July of 2021 we transitioned back indoors at Laurel Park Elementary School, but we continue to worship at the park throughout the year to remember God’s kindness and provision to our church while bringing the Gospel to our community instead of asking our community to come to us.

Beginning May of 2024 our congregation became autonomous, under the new name “Shelter Church”. While this certainly harkens back to our experience at Apex Community Park, as we survey the Scriptures we also see that God is our shelter, shelter is found in Jesus Christ, and that those who have experienced shelter are called to extend that to others.
